County of Barrhead encourages residents to take pride in their community. One way to express this civic pride is by applying to commemorate a notable or impactful resident, reflect the County’s heritage, or recognize the flora, fauna & natural features that make up our community, through the naming of a municipal facility.The County’s Commemorative Naming Policy PD-002 provides guidelines, criteria, and an application process for commemorative naming in the County of Barrhead.
What is eligible?
Commemorative naming applications may be submitted for the following municipal assets:
- Public facilities
- Parks
- Trails
Application Process
- Submit a completed Commemorative Naming Application:
- Include details about the proposed asset for renaming
- Write a description of the proposed name’s importance to the County of Barrhead
- Include letters of support from 10 County residents
- Pay the application fee
- Applications are reviewed by Administration to ensure eligibility and brought to Council for a decision.
- If approved by Council, Administration will advertise a 30-day appeal period for County residents to appeal the proposed name.
- If no appeals are received, the name becomes official and signage will be installed at the County's discretion.
Commemorative Naming Criteria
Acceptable names will honour:
- County residents who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces or who have lost their life in public service.
- Local individuals or families who made significant social, political, sport, or cultural contribution to the County.
- Historical significance at a regional, provincial or national level, with priority given to themes with local significance.
- Recognizing local native wildlife, flora, fauna or natural features.
If proposed name is honouring an individual, the individual must be retired, deceased, or no longer actively involved in the activity, profession, or public role for which they are being recognized.
Discriminatory, derogatory, or undesirable names will not be approved. See the Commemorative Naming Policy for more details and examples of ineligible names.
