The Animal Control Bylaw outlines the responsibilities of dog owners, provides guidance on Vicious Dogs, and provides for the keeping of laying hens in residential areas under certain circumstances. Our Peace Officer is appointed to enforce this Bylaw and will respond to any complaints received. To report an Animal Control issue, contact 780-284-9757.
The primary regulations of this Bylaw include:
- 2 dogs permitted in Non-agricultural Districts.
- 4 dogs permitted in Agricultural Districts.
- 10 chickens permitted in Non-Agricultural Districts where the lot is 2 acres or larger in size (see Section 9 for further details and specific rules).
- First time keeping your own chickens? Read the Province's Guide for Raising Chickens in Alberta.
- Wild Boar are prohibited from being kept temporarily or permanently in the County.
Dogs at Large
Dogs which are found to be at large may be seized and taken to an animal shelter. The owner of a dog taken to a shelter is liable for the cost of housing the dog and may be fined under the bylaw. Our department will make every effort to locate the owner of a dog which is at large or has been seized. While fines are possible, our department strives to take an "education first" approach when circumstances allow.
Animal Protection Act
The Animal Protection Act protects animals in Alberta from distress, neglect and abandonment. Our Peace Officer is appointed to enforce this act and will respond to any complaints received. If you have an animal welfare concern, contact 780-284-9757.
