Emergency Alert - Thunder Lake Fires

UPDATE 9:00 AM, May 29:
  • Emergency management staff are on scene at Thunder Lake this morning to assess damage & ensure site safety before coordinating a safe return for residents. 
  • Evacuation order is still in place for Thunder Lake subdivision. Thunder Lake evacuees are not allowed to return home at this time. County of Barrhead will advise affected residents when they can return. 
  • Further updates will be provided approximately 10:00 AM on May 29, 2026. 
 
UPDATE 9:45 PM, May 28:
  • Evacuation order is still in place for Thunder Lake subdivision.
  • Thunder Lake evacuees will not be allowed to return overnight.
  • County of Barrhead will advise affected residents when they can return. 
  • Fire response is still controlling hotspots and assessing impact to utilities.
  • Further updates to be provided approximately 9:00 AM on May 29, 2026.  
 
UPDATE 6:45 PM, May 28:
Residents of Summerlea Subdivision can return to their homes. Thunder Lake residents must remain evacuated. 
 
UPDATE 6:00 PM, May 28:
Fire crews have contained the fire, but residents must continue to remain out of the area.

County of Barrhead has issued a wildfire alert.

There are structural fires in the Thunder Lake Subdivision, south of the Provincial Park boat launch.

Residents of the Thunder Lake subdivision must evacuate immediately. Take highway 18 to Barrhead and register at the County of Barrhead office (5306-49 Street, Barrhead, AB).
 
All residents should avoid traveling near this area.
