Does your community non-profit organization qualify for a municipal tax exemption?

The Community Organization Property Tax Exemption Regulation (COPTER) provides a property tax exemption for registered non-profit organizations and qualifying properties.

County of Barrhead is currently accepting property tax exemption applications & renewals from registered non-profit organizations in our municipality.

Deadline for new applications/renewals for the 2025 tax year is September 30, 2024.

How does COPTER work?
  • All properties in a municipality are subject to local assessment and taxation.
  • Municipal Government Act provides some tax exemptions to qualifying properties that reflect social values & accessibility, and benefit the public with their use.
  • Tax exemptions can apply to property owned or used by non-profit organizations providing services related to:
    • Government
    • Education
    • Charity
    • Religion
    • Culture
    • Historic preservation
If you have questions about the process or aren't sure whether you qualify, don't hesitate to reach out to the County of Barrhead!  You can also find more information in the Province's Guide to Property Tax Exemptions in Alberta.
